HOPE worldwide School Outreach Programme (Tin Shui Wai)

Like Sham Shui Po, the Tin Shui Wai area in Yuen Long District is one with the greatest concentration of low-income families. According to a study report on Tin Shui Wai New Town published by the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Social Work and Social Administration, there are more new arrivals and single-parent households in this area. Those who are in the labour force tend to work in lower-end jobs due to their lower education level.

Like the poor in other parts of Hong Kong, children from these families lack the opportunity and resources to develop their potential, therefore affecting their future social mobility. Most of these families are stuck in this cycle of inter-generational poverty.

In 2009, we began the School Outreach Programme to serve the children in Tin Shui Wai.  We partner with the surrounding primary schools and use their facilities to provide the same academic enhancement and character-building programmes as those in the Shek Kip Mei centre. Our staff and volunteers go into the schools and serve children participating in these programmes. We currently have six partner schools.
