According to a survey conducted by the Chinese University, one out of ten elders has sarcopenia. Subsidized by The Hong Kong Jockey Club and in cooperation with Sham Shui Po health centres, ‘JC InnoPower@ Healthy Ageing in Park’ program has screened 120 elders in the community. More than 40 of them are identified as suspected sarcopenia, whom are then assessed by our physiotherapist. Analysis and physical test are adopted to find out which part of their body has inadequate muscle mass and strength.
This group of sarcopenic elders are now followed up by 4 students from the Department of Physical Education of the University of Education. Exercise classes are regularly arranged in a public facilitated park near their residence, for pinpointing and strengthening their physical weaknesses in order to restore the functions and reduce the risk of falls. These elders are encouraged to go to the park to regularly practise on their own.
