I Really Trust the Centre for Kids
2019-06-14

These words came from Zack’s father.  Zack is a small, grade-two boy who has been coming to the HOPE worldwide Centre for Kids for the past two years.

The challenge handed to us

When Zack first came, he didn’t know how to get along with other kids.  When kids asked him if he wanted to play, he did not answer.  If he did answer, he would only say “I don’t want to.”  If he wanted a toy that someone else was playing with, he simply grabbed it.  He ran around in circles in the homework tutorial class.

There is a reason

Over time, we noticed that Zack exhibited symptoms consistent with children who have special educational needs.  We communicated this concern to Zack’s father and recommended that he talk with Zack’s school about it.  Zack was eventually officially diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and began to receive some medical intervention.

In the meantime, we continued to help Zack, especially with his social skills and self-control.  We focused on teaching him to respect others and limited the number of times he could say “I don’t want to”.  When he refused to do homework or revision, we insisted that he do them but gave him choices on what he could do.

Great improvements!

In just one year, Zack has made great improvements!  He has made friends with the other kids at the Centre.  Every day before his homework tutorial class, we see him build amazing Lego structures with the other kids.  His academic results also improved significantly (He is one of the four kids we highlighted in a story in March)!

We are encouraged by Zack’s changes and growth.  We are also humbled by the trust both Zack’s father and our donors have for us to continue to bring hope and change lives – one child at a time.
