Fall prevention
Every year, 1 out of 5 elderly in Hong Kong will suffer a fall.
Consequences of hip fractures resulting from falls:
- 40% will die within 4 years
- 80% of fallers suffer reduction in mobility
- Decrease in the quality of life
We recruit, train, and organize volunteers to educate the elderly about fall prevention. Using a simple tool developed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, our volunteers can assess the fall risk of the elderly person. We then follow up on those who have been identified as high risk cases. Follow-up services include facilitating handrail installation and visits by physio or occupational therapists. Installing handrail in the elderly’s bathrooms and having therapists teach simple exercises to the elderly can reduce the chance of falling.
